Tall Ships

This series of Gicl'ee prints commemorates the Alaskan portion of Captain James Cook's third and final voyage of discovery. Sailing the ships 'Resolution' and 'Discovery', Cook surveyed Alaska's coast for a Northwest passage in the year 1778. Early the next year, Cook met his untimely death on the island of Hawaii in an  encounter with the native people that regretfully turned violent.

Fascinated by the enormous contribution that Cook made to the State of Alaska, by naming multiple landmarks and charting its coastline, Charles has endeavored to create images that transport us back in time. His goal has been to create compositions that help the viewer imagine what the the historic passage may have been like. Working from copies of the original draught plans of the ship, Charles first created in his computer a three dimensional scale model of the Resolution that he could work from to ensure that all the proportions were accurate. Charles' future plans are to visit some more sites along Cook's route to place the ships in additional historically accurate locations.
